WordPress as a Notepad?

Posted by Anton-io! | 3:48 PM | 0 comments »

Yes I did it!

Every day information is coming from all over the place - how do you stay organized?

I could use OutLook, Thunderbird or some type of notepad to keep it all together, but that means opening up the application, opening files, hunting for files and voila ... getting the information I need.

Why not try using WordPress as a notepad?!?

Not online, but localhost. You will need to have PHP & MySQL installed on your personal computer and this is part of the strategy to try to keep things organized (just like keeping all your passwords in one place).

First off, if you're running Windows XP home, then you have more challenges.

No more, I've been using Sokkit for a number of years as a localhost webserver with PHP & MySQL. Cuts development time in half. No need to upload files to server and keep checking output on server. You can do it all locally on your machine.

Your webserver is for yourself, that's it, nothing fancy about that.

Why do it this way?

You can categories your notes, view your postings by dates, search for keyword in your posts and more. Best of all, it's fast, easy to use and gives you better exposure to WordPress

Have fun!

Ok, so by now I have over 100+ passwords to work with.
Keep them all in a spreadsheet?
How about a database file?
Forget it!
Last time I had a hard drive crash, I almost panicked. Yes I did lose a lot of files that were not backed up, but it was my passwords I was most concerned about.
Many months ago I started looking for a simple utility that would save my passwords, automatically fill in forms and basically save me time for not having to type in all those reduandant passwords.
To much to remember, too little time
In my opinion, this is the Best Password Manager hand down! Explore for yourself and find out how easy it is to automatically fill in forms, save passwords and more.
[end of plug!]

You've got a website and that's snazzy!!!

Know where you website traffic is coming from?

Google Analytics continues to amaze me ... first off it's free and secondly, you can view some interesting stats about your website users, where they're coming form, where they live and more.

I set up a few sites many months back ... now it's too interesting to review these stats!

Most, if not all, web hosting servers offer website statistics with varying information. With Google Analytics, say you are running an AdWords campaign, you can really moniter you conversions and costs associated with them.

Getting to know AJAX

Posted by Anton-io! | 11:50 AM | | 0 comments »

It's out there and any developer creating forms or any interactivity with the user online should be having a look in to AJAX

What is AJAX?

  • With AJAX you can create better, faster, and more user-friendly web applications.
  • AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML.
  • AJAX is based on JavaScript and HTTP requests.
  • AJAX is a type of programming made popular in 2005 by Google (with Google Suggest).
  • AJAX is not a new programming language, but a new way to use existing standards.
  • Ajax, or AJAX, (Asynchronous Javascript And XML) is a web development technique used for creating interactive web applications.
Ajax is asynchronous in that extra data is requested from the server and loaded in the background without interfering with the display and behaviour of the existing page. JavaScript is the scripting language in which Ajax function calls are usually made. Data is retrieved using the XMLHttpRequest object that is available to scripting languages run in modern browsers. There is, however, no requirement that the asynchronous content is formatted in XML.

Voip Directory update and positioning

Posted by Anton-io! | 2:34 AM | 1 comments »

Because of recent server migration, a lot of code either went missing or sessions not working or different version of PHP on server, I think it was to CSS-ify and update the VoIP directory for faster loading, cleaner output and easier user functionality.

You can subscribe to updates to the site here ...

What is this VoIP Service Directory site you ask?

It is a directory of categorized voice over IP companies (VoIP) from business, residential and wholesale services. Companies are able to submit their website links to be listed in the index (currently disabled)

Benefits for VoIP companies are additional exposure, links back to their website and more.

Here is an example of a residential and business VoIP company ZingoTel, Packet8 or ViaTalk

Search engine positioning: 'voip directory'

#3 - The current position for keyword 'voip directory' in Google is #3
http://www.google.com/search?q=voip+directory

#1 - MSN search

Yahoo - still working on this one!

Adsense channels not tracking?

Posted by Anton-io! | 10:14 AM | | 0 comments »

Over the last couple of days I've noticed my Adsense channels not tracking.
You Adsense publishers know what this is.
Luckily, you are may not be the only one.
Apparently it is an issue with many accounts, and on digitalpoint forums, it seems to be affecting many others as well

Here is the forum thread:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=525095

What is Google Adsense you say!

AdSense is an ad serving program run by Google. Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image and, more recently, video advertisements on their sites. These ads are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-thousand-impressions basis. AdSense uses JavaScript code to incorporate the advertisements into a participating site and it is really easy to set up and administer.

Who would have thought that web hosting prices have gotten so cheap? I remember the days of having to pay for a set-up fee, then there's a monthly charge and yes ... watch your bandwidth because you'll be charged extra!!!

No more, web hosting has become very competitive.

Here's a great deal for cheap web hosting

  • 100 GB of server space - great if you are hosting a photography website that takes up a lot of space from images or videos
  • 1,000 email accounts - what for this?
  • Monthly bandwidth transfers of 1000 GB per month - wow!
  • Unlimited sub-domains - can you imagine the search engine (SEO) potential here. Each sub-domain is viewed as a seperate domain in the search engine eyes
  • PHP, MySQL database, web stats and more
Best of all, PayPal is accepted. So if you have money just sitting there, what do you have to lose?
Check out this cheap web hosting deal here ...

Personally, I'm familiar with this system and the web hosting services are rock solid!

Automation, automation, automation!

Basically one former Corey Rudl's key points for internet website marketing.

Good overview to start with:

So what works with out current server?

/usr/bin/php /home/username/public_html/cron_test.php

An interesting article I came across in the National Post today about FaceBook

To quote a few lines that caught my attention

"After the novelty of editing my "status" every few hours wore off ("I'm writing my column," "I'm considering a nap?"), I got bored. It's a stage for showcasing one's wit, charm and social worthiness and therefore inherently competitive. Friendship quality is irrelevant; quantity and self-promotion are all that count."

Cable vs DSL in BC

Posted by Anton-io! | 8:29 PM | | 0 comments »

Here are some quick points about cable & DSL modems

  • Cable modems run faster than DSL
  • Cable supports 30Mbps of bandwidth, where DSL can reach 10Mbps
  • Cable modem services can slow down significantly if many people in your neighborhood access the Internet simultaenously.
  • DSL and cable Internet providers often implement so-called "speed caps" that limit the bandwidth of their services.
  • In the U.S., cable Internet enjoys significantly greater popularity than DSL

AboutDSL:

DSL (digital subscriber line) technology uses plain old copper phone wires to deliver data at high speeds to your home or office.

  • In the U.S., cable Internet enjoys significantly greater popularity than DSL

Who has the fastest downloading ability?

http://www.dslreports.com/archive

Based on today's date, the following was derived:

  • Rogers Communication - 27th spot - 4883 Down/512 Up (Kbps)
  • Shaw Cable - 52nd position - 3490 Down/533 Up
  • Primus - 49th position - 2786/559
  • Look Communications - 82 - 2564/1225
  • MTS - 95 - 2368/475
  • Telus - 101 - 2147/698

Where to do a speed test of your internet connection
Speakeasy Speed Test

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

My current Telus speed test result:

Download Speed: 1322 kbps (165.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 546 kbps (68.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

What is this DOCSIS?

Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS)

DOCSIS permits the addition of high-speed data transfer to an existing Cable TV
(CATV) system.

DOCSIS in Canada

Conclusion - none given yet

Today I came accross a forum post about Article Re-Writers for WordPress. Interesting utility for anyone writing articles or with an article type of website.

What was more of an interesting find was E-Junkie!!!

E-junkie provides shopping cart and buy now buttons to let you sell downloads and tangible goods on your website, eBay, MySpace, Google Base, CraigsList and other websites using PayPal, Google Checkout, Authorize.Net, TrialPay, 2CheckOut and ClickBank.

Well ... I recently got into
posting to blogs by email and on the default Wordpress.com website, can seem to find out how to do this. Hence I am back at Blogger only to realize that an old account is here and yes, I still like the name

So here is a simple post to test out Thunderbird and posting by email
